USA international Adu, 22, has endured a difficult time in Europe since leaving Real Salt Lake for Benfica in 2007, spending time out on loan with Monaco in France, Belenenses in Portugal, Aris in Greece and Caykur Rizespor in Turkey.
He is now said to have agreed a return to the MLS with the Union, and the club have confirmed on their website that "a player introduction is scheduled to take place Friday at PPL Park".
Asked about the club's efforts in the transfer market, head coach Piotr Nowak said: "We're working on it. We're working very hard to make it happen."
