Schalke thrashed Koln 5-1 to pick up their first points of the Bundesliga season after a 0-3 reverse to Stuttgart on the opening matchday. It was the visitors who took a surprise lead, when Lukas Podolski finished off Slawomir Peszko’s pass following a fast break. However, Schalke were level just before half-time, when Klass Jan Huntelaar stroked home a spot-kick after Kevin McKenna handled inside the area.
Within three minutes of the restart, Schalke were 3-1 up after Marco Holger set up both Huntelaar and Lewis Holtby. The scoring continued on the hour mark, when Jan Movarek found Raul inside the area, and the veteran striker made no mistake from 10 yards out. Huntelaar completed the rout five minutes from the end with a simple finish to Jose Jurardo’s cross to round off his personal treble.
Schalke starts this campaign positively compared the last season when they found themselves bottom of the league for a nearly a month.
