Liverpool to offload Meireles

Raul Meireles is resigned to leaving Liverpool this summer after it became apparent he is surplus to requirements.

The Portugal international is understood to be frustrated that talks over a new deal have not taken place but Liverpool never made any firm promises.

There was a loose agreement when he arrived last summer from FC Porto that his situation would be revisited at the end of his first season if things went well.

Liverpool, though, are pressing ahead with the business of signing new players and working on deals to bring in Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Connor Wickham, which they are confident will reach a successful conclusion.

With skipper Steven Gerrard fit to return for the start of pre-season and £16million arrival Jordan Henderson also now in the frame, Liverpool have a surfeit of midfielders.

Meireles, who has been linked with Juventus and Inter Milan in recent weeks, is deemed dispensable and Liverpool would want to recoup upwards of the £11.5m they paid for him last August.
