Uruguay are currently level with Argentina on 14 Copa America successes, but with the Albiceleste having already been dumped out along with two-time reigning champions Brazil, Tabarez's men are now favourites to win their first crown since 1995.
However, in a tournament that has produced a number of upsets already - including Uruguay's quarter-final penalty shoot-out success over star-studded Argentina - Tabarez is not underestimating the threat posed by Peru in tomorrow's semi-final in La Plata.
"If you paid attention to everything that was written before the Copa America, they are a surprise, but I know the Peruvian style of play, their coaching staff, and in every tournament there appears a team who were not in the original calculations,'' he said.
"Maybe Peru and Venezuela have caught the attention most, but I'm not surprised.
"It's going to be a very difficult game, it's going to be against a team that is going to stand toe-to-toe with Uruguay.''
He added: "We've completed the minimum objective that we'd planned before coming, which was to repeat what we did in the last Copa America (reaching the semi-finals). We now have to see what happens against Peru.''
Uruguay and Peru have already clashed once on this year's Copa America, with the pair sharing a 1-1 draw in the opening match in Group C.
Peru have won the Copa America twice before, with the most recent occasion being in 1975.
