Tottenham remain keen on Spanish star Mata

Tottenham are to press ahead in their efforts to beat Arsenal to Spain Under 21 star Juan Mata amid continuing uncertainty over the future of Luka Modric.

Valencia have admitted there is fierce competition for the winger from two English clubs, with the Spaniards willing to sell for £21million.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy last night repeated his determination to keep Modric but the player has declared his intention to leave.

Arsenal are in a strong position to sign Mata and have opened negotiations, but Tottenham hope they can convince him White Hart Lane would be his best career move.

Tottenham are still looking to offload players and have offered right back Alan Hutton, 26, to Aston Villa.

The Midlands club also remain keen to finalise a deal for Wigan winger Charles N’Zogbia, 25, and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given, 35.
