Craig Gardner left Birmingham to the Stadium of Light

Former Birmingham City midfielder Craig Gardner delighted with move to Sunderland
The midfielder hails his "unbelievable" move to the Stadium of Light, insisting that the move to ply his trade under manager Steve Bruce was too good to turn down

Craig Gardner has admitted that he is happy to have joined Sunderland, insisting that the chance to play at the Stadium of Light was one that he could not turn down.

Birmingham City fell prey to relegation on the final day of the Premier League last season, with the midfielder scoring 11 goals in a campaign that saw the Blues winning the League Cup.

But with top-flight football being unavailable for the relegated side, the 24-year-old joined the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee.

"It's unbelievable, to be honest. As soon as I found out Sunderland were interested, it was a no-brainer," Gardner told SAFC TV.

"Obviously, I have heard so much about Steve Bruce and his backroom staff and how good a chairman Niall Quinn is.

"It's such a massive club and their ambitions for this season meet my ambitions, and it was too good to turn down."

Gardner was the third signing for Sunderland in two days, with South Korean striker Ji Dong-Won and Connor Wickham having also joined the club.
