Jurgen Klinsmann was hired by the United States Soccer Federation to be the next coach of the men’s national team on Friday. Goal.com reported yesterday that the former Germany boss was the favorite for the position and Gulati was finally able to reach an agreement with the 46-year-old coach.
“We are excited to have Jürgen as the head coach of our Men’s National Team,” said Gulati. “He is a highly accomplished player and coach with the experience and knowledge to advance the program. Jürgen has had success in many different areas of the game and we look forward to the leadership he will provide on and off the field.”
A resident of the United States, Klinsmann has been passionate about the growth of soccer within the country. He has a good relationship with U.S. star Landon Donovan and has been working as a consultant for Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. He is excited to finally have the opportunity.
“I am proud and honored to be named the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Klinsmann. “I would like to thank the U.S. Soccer Federation for the opportunity, and I’m excited about the challenge ahead. I am looking forward to bringing the team together for our upcoming match against Mexico and starting on the road toward qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.”
The USSF announced that Klinsmann will have his first press conference as head coach on Aug. 1 in New York. His first game will be against Mexico in a friendly in Philadelphia on Aug. 10.
