One killed and two seriously injured after roof of Twente stadium collapses

Peter den Oudsten, the mayor of Enschede, has stated that one person has died in an accident at Twente's stadium.

The roof of one of the stands in the Grolsch Veste collapsed earlier today while builders were at work.

Den Oudsten said: "There were several people trapped under the rubble. There was one fatality and two seriously injuries. Ten people are in the hospital.

"This is a tremendous tragedy and our sympathy goes out to the victims. As we speak we're searching for other victims under the rubble with cameras and dogs."

Club director Jan van Halst told reporters: "Our sympathy goes out to the victims and their families.

"I understand that fans of FC Twente want to take a look at the stadium, but stay at home and be informed by the media. Let the people at the stadium do their job."

The 2010 Eredivisie champions' stadium is currently undergoing expansion and the roof of the stand being worked on is the one that gave way. It is not yet known why support beams failed to hold up.

Twente are away at a training camp, but club president Joop Munsterman is on his way back to Enschede after being informed of the news.
